Currant Bun - a very special rabbit

Currant Bun's tales from the Warren

It is with great sadness that we have to report the death of Currant Bun on 25 Sept 2008. He was put to sleep in my arms and went so very quickly I feel he was ready to go.
He had been struggling health wise for several months, his back legs were not working as well as they should. With high pain relief and other medication we were lucky enough to have him with us for the summer. He loved the summer and he quickly learnt to indicate to us when he wanted to be lifted down from his shelf so he could go outside and enjoy the sunshine and grass. He always let us know when he wanted to be put back in his litter tray where he continued to rule the roost.
He was able to move around freely on his 'shelf' and had a birds eye view of events outside. From his vantage point he could see everyone as they came and went, and he never dozed on the job!! His pain relief was given to him on baby corn each day, which he greedily devoured.
Currant developed an abscess on the top of his head which refused to heal. There was an underlying lump beneath it. His lymph gland was swollen in his one hind leg and the day before I made the final decision he looked tired. Currant Bun never looked tired.
I am so glad he was able to enjoy the last summer here. He adored being able to nibble the fresh grass and hide in the brambles. He was always watching everything that was going on in his territory and I should have hated for him not to feel well enough to be 'The Boss'.
Currant is buried here at Windwhistle Warren and he will continue to care for his territory in his own special way.
The love of his life was Toffee Cherry which is why I have decided the final picture added to his tales would be the pair of them taken last Winter.
The Duchess is missing him greatly and I now need to put things right for her.

CB Report No. 3

Hello, I often think of you my friends and wonder how you are.

As you may know I live in the country, and I was led to believe I would have a quiet, peaceful life. This is certainly not the case! Since last writing to you I have experienced two particularly noisy occurences, the one appears to be more ongoing than the other.

First, there was 'The Fire'. I was alerted to a happening rather early for a Sunday morning when the doors of the shed were suddenly flung open and Alice unceremoniously dumped a few orphans with us. There was no 'Hello, this is Gertrude', or any other ridiculous name she labels the poor creatures with. Then all went quiet. I had a potter around, checked out the newcomers, but couldn't hear anything, so I got back in my litter tray for a snooze.

Then all of this palaver. The shed remained shut and my breakfast was jolly late. Several hours late. I was in the middle of foraging for a meagre scrap to share with Toffee Cherry when the doors opened with a bang and firemen came in. For some reason they checked all the hay, stared at us in bewilderment, then went. Well, apparently the garages had burnt down, all vehicles, tools etc gone. Anyway, my breakfast was very late and I was most huffy for several days.

Second thing to affect me is the arrival of another dog. Bob. He is very hairy, very noisy and very annoying. He often needs a jolly good nip, and he squeals, but someone needs to keep him in his place and Alice is useless at asserting her authority over the mutt. He has a bald patch on one of his legs where his hair no longer grows, but he so deserved it.

And just as I thought I could relax, the Rescue is being overhauled! Eventually all the hutches will be moved, enlarged and everything tidied up. We have a new name 'Windwhistle Warren', and a web site. Obviously, in order to salve my displeasure at any changes I have been dangled the honour of being a predominant feature of the site and you will be able to visit me on line to hear my reports. Don't get me wrong but I think the whole web site should be just about me and Toffee Cherry. Why Alice thinks you want to see the orphans is beyond me, but she does seem to have a mental block where this is concerned.

Thank you so much for caring about us. I am very special and I guess a few other rabbits are too. With your help a lot of bunnies have been neutered and fully vaccinated and given their own 'Forever Homes'. Which is good, I get more attention then!

Yours, Currant Bun. xxxx

CB Report No. 2

Hello, Currant Bun on duty!

Before I say anything else thank you all so much for your support. To be quite honest Alice is absolutely overwhelmed by your kindness. Alice is the type who takes things to heart so don’t worry about her being overwhelmed, she will just have to get used to other people adoring me as much as she and Toffee Cherry do and wanting to help. Fact of life really, I am an utter delight!!

We do have some fun here! Alice is terrified of rats, now I mean terrified, it is hilarious! Toffee Cherry and I were supervising the placement of a few hutches recently, and do you know what, underneath one there were two huge rats!! Ha, ha. I must say joking aside I am glad Rat Protection were not around because she ran into the yard screaming and crying real tears, those poor rats scarpered, they were so scared! Alice insists she has an obia or something? We have no idea what this is but think it may be a musical instrument she is going to play in the shed to try and frighten them away. We await this with some trepidation and can only pray to our Bunny God in earth that she does not sing as well.

Now, I don’t want you to think I don’t love Alice and as you know one of our duties is to bring a smile to her face each day. When I see she is whey faced I always notice and I make a very special point of going up to her, putting my paws on her knees and giving her a nose rub instead of an extra special nip. She then tells me I am one of her best friends, smiles, and I am able to get on with my other tasks. Life’s so simple really.

Well, guess this is it for now, things to do, life to live! Seriously, thank you my friends.

Hi, Currant Bun reporting!

I live here with my wife Toffee Cherry, who adores me. Our duties involve a daily grass quality check, sussing out prospective adoptees, ensuring Alice maintains the hutches to a satisfactory standard, and bringing a smile to her face each day.

I have not always been so happy. Bought as a very cute baby I was a spoiled house rabbit with lots of cuddles and attention. However, being a man bunny I scented things which vexed my owners so I was moved into the garden. When they visited me each day I continued to spray and the man got very angry with me and would lash out, my other owner was frightened he would kill me, so I came here.

Sometimes I find it hard to explain to Alice that I am unhappy, so I bite her, just a quick bite, and she swiftly catches on that something is amiss! This happened when my first wife died, I was so sad, I didn’t understand why she had gone. Alice introduced me to another lady bunny, but she was just not my cup of dandelion and camomile, we had absolutely nothing in common. Zilch actually. I couldn’t understand why I had to meet her, so I got very angry and stamped and huffed and bit. Then Toffee Cherry arrived, a dame with class and distinction, just my type!!

So, that’s it. This is me.
